Stair Lighting Repairs and Investigations

If you require us to investigate or repair faulty stair light fittings (e.g a stair light fitting is hanging off the wall) together with our tube/starter replacement service you will be charged at a rate of £15.00 per 15mins (most issues can usually be resolved within 15 minutes). Our blog has some examples of problems that we've dealt with.

Starters

If you require the starters to be replaced together with your stair light tube replacements you will be charged an additional £7.00 to replace both starters (we always replace both starters).

Fuses and circuit breakers

If you require a fuse or circuit breaker to be changed together with your stair light tube replacement you will be charged an additional £15.00 (per Fuse Wire) - £35.00 (per Circuit Breaker) - £50.00 (Main Service Cut Out Fuse).

Why Don't Edinburgh City Council Maintain stair lighting anymore?

Due to budget constraints, they decided to stop this service meaning that tenement flat owners now need to maintain their own stair lighting. Although CEC don't maintain stair lighting, they do still pay for the electricity in Edinburgh tenement stairways if the lighting installed is compliant with their regulations.

Whoe Sets the Timings for the Astro Clocks?

Astro timers track the Edinburgh sun. Once we put in the coordinates i.e. 56 degrees north and 3 degrees west and the time they automatically change between 2 and 7 minutes daily and update for BST.

Can We Install Any LED Lights In Our Stairwell?

There are no official council specifications that state which LEDs are required. The only thing they insist on is a working timer (as they still pay for the electricity) and any new fixture doesn't exceed the 16 watts the existing fitting uses. New Coughtrie LEDs for example are only 8 watts. The bulkheads however should ideally be 1100 lumens or more. The existing fluorescent tubes the council installed are only around 800 lumens. Essentially it's up to the owners as it is their stairwell.

Why Should We Change the Stair Lights to LED?

T5 8w fluorescent tubes which the council installed in the past are no longer being manufactured. You can still use them until stocks are sold. This means that eventually, all stair lighting will need to be converted to LED.

LED bulkheads last much longer than traditional lamps, meaning fewer replacements and reduced maintenance costs over time. In addition, LED lights are brighter and more environmentally friendly than fluorescent tubes.

Do You Fix Timeclocks?

Yes, we are experts at syncing or installing new digital astro timers. We sync timers if they lose time during power cuts. The timers have a backup battery in them which usually fails after around 10 years. The backup battery keeps time during a power failure, however, once the battery fails you have to keep resetting it in the event of a power cut.
